Year 1 created some amazing mini animal habitat boxes for their curiosity projects during the half-term holiday. We were so impressed by the hard work that went into these projects – they are so imaginative and creative. The children created habitats for many different animals – penguins, polar bears, fish, camels and even dinosaurs! Well done Year 1!
In Year 1 we have been learning about algorithms. We had iPads to go into the Scratch programme. We learnt how to make Sprites which is another term for characters and we made our own backgrounds. We wrote algorithms for our Sprites to give them different directions to follow.
Science trip to West Ham Park
Year 1 had the opportunity to do some outside learning this month. We went to West Ham Park to search for different plants and we went on a minibeast hunt. We planted our own seeds and took a walk around the park looking for different trees and leaves. We talked about roots and how plants stay alive. It was a cold day but an enjoyable one. Thank you West Ham Park volunteers for making our day extra special!
History Off the Page
In History we have been researching old toys and how they are different to the toys we play with now at home. We have been sorting old and new toys and looking at the different materials they are made out of. We were lucky to have History Off the Page come in to our school and show us all the different toys from many years ago. We were able to be toy investigators and toy makers for the day.
World Book Day
What a fantastic time we had on World Book Day! The author Anne Fine came to talk to us about how to be a good writer and read some of her stories to us. Year 1 made a brilliant effort to dress up and we had a variety of costumes – from the BFG to Harry Potter and everything in between. To finish the day we had a reading blanket on the tables where we could look at different books and choose a book to take home. The children also recommended books to each other and we finished off with a story.
Year 1 and 2 Enjoy Maths Week
Thank you to Ms Bellamy for organising a fun Maths Week at Hallsville. During the week, pupils took part in lots of interesting activities, showing them just how varied maths can be. As well as watching an interactive workshop by Caboodle, they took part in maths games organised by the Y1 and Y2 teachers. They played bingo, created shape patterns and acted as pirates, using coordinates to find hidden treasure. The pictures below show just some of these activities.
In Geography we have been learning about the world and the different continents. We located the continents using an atlas and a globe and we discussed the differences between hot and cold countries. We then went on a school trip to London City Airport to find out more about how we can travel around the world.
In Year 1 we have been learning about materials. We decided to carry out an investigation to find out which materials are waterproof. First we made a prediction, then in groups we tested fabric, plastic, foil, tissue paper and cotton wool. We poured an equal amount of water onto each material and carefully observed which materials let water through and which didn’t.
In Art this term we created different types of self-portraits. We made a collage using the correct colours for our skin tone and features. We used mirrors to draw our faces using different pencils. Finally we practised painting techniques and then painted our final piece.
National Portrait Gallery
On Thursday 24th November Year 1 went on a visit to the National Portrait Gallery. We arrived by coach and made our way quietly into the Gallery. Our topic this term in Art is Self-Portraits. We looked at the different paintings from the past and present and we compared the different styles. We did our own sketches and thought of some ideas for our own self portraits when we get back to school. At the end of our trip we had lunch in Trafalgar Square. What an amazing trip we had!
Black History Week
This week at Hallsville we have been celebrating Black History week. In music we have been learning about how to use drums to listen and follow the rhythm. The drums are from Ghana in Africa. We had so much fun!
Not Now Bernard
As part of our DT topic we have been making moving pictures based on the story of ‘Not Now Bernard’. We chose our characters, the wallpaper and the carpet. We had to carefully cut around our characters. We learnt two new words for the different movements: slide and pivot.
Our topic this term is Seasons. Our Year 1 team were so impressed and delighted with the Seasons projects which came in. Thank you to all our parents and carers who took the time to work with their children at home on these fantastic projects!
There’s a Shark in the Park!
In class we have been reading the story ‘There’s a Shark in the Park’ written by Nick Sharratt. Barbara and Kyle told us that they saw a shark in Keir Hardie park so we went on a shark hunt! We used our telescopes to find the dangerous shark. Luckily all we found was a cat, crow and a cool dad.
In Year 1 we have been lucky to have had the chance to use laptops in our classrooms. We have been learning about keeping our personal information safe and how to keep safe when online. We have also been learning about how to use the keyboard correctly when typing, to keep a good posture when sitting and to have breaks to rest our eyes.
On Friday 1st July Year One travelled on the underground all the way to Kew Gardens. We visited the Palm House and saw plants and flowers from all over the world. We saw colourful and strangely shaped leaves and we learned where chocolate and vanilla come from. We had an interesting workshop where we learned all about bees and seed dispersal. We had so much fun and all want to go back again next year.
History off the Page: Toys
On Friday 11th March Year One had a very special day. We learned all about Toys from the past. We played with lots of different toys and even got the chance to be archaeologists and dig for toys! In the afternoon we made lots of different toys.
London City Airport
On Friday 29th January Year One went on an educational visit to London City Airport. We had been learning about the differences between hot and cold countries and the different transport that you can find around the world. On our visit we were shown around the airport and we checked in for a flight. We all loved watching the planes take off and land. We learned the difference between a jet engine and propeller planes.
LGBT Anti-bullying Competition
These are the class winners from Year 1 for the LGBT Anti Bullying Competition. The categories were for best cake, t-shirt and poster or poem.
Year One have been learning about different countries around the world. They have investigated the weather in these countries and found the countries on a globe. Then they made their own globes from play dough labelling the North and South Pole.
